    Yes, I think that was rather harsh and was not the reason I suggested it. My thoughts are that you were willing to spend the money for your relative in the first place, and thusly budgeted for that. By donating to a charity, people benefit and you feel good about yourself :)
    One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

    I know exactly what you meant.

    My mum recently wrote to a company abroad asking if was possible to buy a replacement for an item that she had bought but had given to my niece (3) when my niece spied it on her Christmas Tree.

    Mum was shocked one day to come home to find the company had sent her a complimentary replacement - with no request for payment.

    As my mum had been willing to pay the cost and the postage for said item, she felt that it would be appropriate to donate what she would have spent to a charity.
