paid savings into closed account...HELP!!

Hi all

Dropped a blunder recently and need any advice.

Wife made an online payment from her Natwest account into my HSBC account. She used a "Payee reference" for ease. Unfortunately this account (I think) is now closed. However the money has gone from Natwest. We have contacted Natwest and they said they will trace it. Surely we havent lost the money have we?

Thanks for any thoughts

Have you asked HSBC if you can withdraw the money?
  • No. The problem is that we don't yet (my wife has to phone Natwest this arvo and ask them) know the account details of the said HSBC account.

If the HSBC account is closed, the payment would have hit their "Unapplied Items" account. It might still be there waiting for someone to claim it or investigate it, or HSBC might have sent it straight back to Nat West.

You need to start by finding out if the account is still open - the money might be on there.

(PS, you know this already but you really do need to keep a tight rein on your accounts so you know which are open/closed.)

You definitely won't lose the money - the payment will have a unique reference number that both banks can trace back. It might just take a few days to do it.

There shouldn't be a problem if the account was closed recently. I have had read reports of problems where an account number has been reused by a bank for another customer.
  • All such payments will be eventually 'returned to sender' unless, of course, the HSBC account is still open. Could take up to 2 weeks, since it needs manual intervention.
  • I did something similar (and very scarily with a large amount on my Dad's behalf) from Natwest to a closed account at Cahoot. It eventually came back, but only after a very sleepless two or three weeks.

    Good luck!
