i suppose it depends on the actual one your thinking of. I know there's a big garmin one that apparently wont move at all, but its ~£20 and quite big.
Amazon has cheaper ones as well, but whether there as stable I don't know.0 -

I've used one of these for a couple of years now and found it to be very stable. Just check the base is the correct size for the suction mounting diameter for your unit.
Mine is the same make but a slightly different design - there's a cut out at the back where I route the power/charging cable.0 -
We looked at these and ended up with a sticky disc to go on the dashtop (use the same attachment as the windscreen)for the large one and a piece of velcro on the dashface for the little sat nav that I can't see without glasses but can listen to.0

I used one when I hired a car in Sweden and it was fantastic0

Until my satnav died i just kept a packet of glass wipes in one of the pockets (out of sight otherwise it would defeat the object) and would simply wipe over the rings when getting out the car... they were at most a few pound for a large packet...0 -
I had the Garmin-specific one back in 2003 and providing your dashboard was reasonably flat it worked very well under normal circumstances.
That said I could get it to break loose during hard cornering and when someone drove into the back of me at 50mph it dislodged the satnav which landed on the gearstick and broke. My hand could have been on that gearstick.
Given that I'd be wary of getting another one, however you do need to bear in mind that s 2003 Garmin satnav is significantly larger and heavier than a modern one.
It also gave better directions than most modern ones I've had. I wish it still worked0 -
Hi
I have one that I got from Halfords - must say I do like it as I don't want anything stuck to the windscreen.
Never had it move at all - think it was about £20
