Faulty gas meter??

I've been corresponding with British Gas for about a year as I'm convinced my gas meter is faulty but they want £60 before they'll come and look at it - and will only return that if it's proved faulty.

The flat's been empty during that time with no heating on and only a pilot light yet the bills are much higher than I'd expect for a pilot light.

Two questions:

1. How can I get the meter checked at no cost?

2. How much should I expect just a pilot light to use a week / or a month?

In answer to 1 I dont know any way. If you are sure its faulty pay the £60 which you will get back when you are proved right.

You say flat has been emtpy for a year, so how many units has the meter advanced? Are you sure the boiler does not have a frost stat which causes it to turn on automatically below a preset temperature?

If the flat was empty and the heating has been off for a year, why didn't you turn off the pilot light (and indeed the main gas tap)?
How many kWh is it using?

    August 2010 135 kWh (28 days)

Why have you left things for so long? Presumably you were convinced more than a year ago there was a fault. People don't work for nothing so pay the £60 and get it checked out. If you are proven correct, then they will fit you a new meter and refund the £60.

About 0.75p per hour then. Seems plausible for a pilot light.

You will not be able to get this tested for free. The meter gets taken away and tested unlike electric meters that get tested in situ. As so many people think they have a faulty meter just because it is winter it is only right that there is a charge to do this work if there is nothing wrong with the meter.
