Direct Debits and standing orders that fall on a weekend?

I have a Standing order that is due for payment on Sat and a Direct debit that is due for payment on Sunday so will they get taken out on that day or will it be on the Monday?

I bank with Halifax.

But, depending on your account's Ts&Cs the money may get "reserved" as early as Friday or Saturday, so you may not be able to access it. You'd need to check.

I bank with Halifax and pay my rent by standing order.
If my rent due date falls on a weekend day, it automaticall adjusts the standing order to go out on the next working day (Monday).
If you do use the online banking its really easy to alter standing orders manually providing you do it within 24 hours before the due date of the standing order.

  • In my own mind then this should be a Monday, but each bank has different rules..

To be on the safe side, just always ensure that the money is in the account by the close of business on Friday.

Direct debits should always be taken on or just after the due date, so if it falls on a weekend/bank holiday then it will be taken on the next bank working day UNLESS the company eg. Sky advises you accordingly.

Standing orders can go over a weekend however you may not notice the transaction leaving your account until the Monday, so in lay-mans terms, make sure your money is in your account Friday!
  • Many thanks guys

will make sure Money is in Bank account by Friday just in case.
