Frozen out at Laura Ashley

I always pay off my laura Ashley(GE Money) card in full. Twice now the bank have frozen my account while they wait for a cheque to clear. Despite having an eight thousand credit limit I was unable to use my card to purchase a ten pound gift last week. How can they do this?
