School trip: is this a rip-off? (X-posted to family branch)

I have to say that posts like these tell me something about why education is in the state that it's in. I am a teacher and I can reiterate that schools make nothing from trips- often a loss. Parents and pupils have got to stop asking the banal 'what are we going to learn' question when it doesn't appear to be obvious. Foreign trips are about life, culture, art, maturity, being independent, chocolate factories, pasta making, theme parks etc etc etc. Education is more than just 3 r's. A good well rounded education offers oppotunities to see and do more than what the restrictive National Curriculum prescribes.
Be grateful that the teachers are willing to take them - it is of no financial benefit to them ( no over time, perks or monetary benefit AT ALL) but the fact that they are doing the right thing by your child.
Please stop seeing education as just exams and curriculum. There is more to life and to your child's experiences. Life long learning is instilled in young people through these activities - these are the children I want to run the country one day (well rounded, broadminded) not 3 r swots who did nothing else but book learning because anything else wasn't 'educational'.
Sorry for the rant I'm just sick of people complaining about schools and what we do there.  :mad:THE LONG AND THE SLOW ROAD SEEM TO APPLY TO DEBTS AND DIETS... THE TWO THINGS I WANT TO SEE THE BACK OF...:D0 -
My son is going to East Barnby (near Whitby) for a week and its costing £195, I thought it was expensive but when we had a meeting about what they will be doing its really quite reasonable. My other son at senior school never brings home any info about trips because he says its a rip off and he is a bit of a home bird (phew)
