debit cards that can be used at post office

I have a nat west basic step account. I asked at the post office if I can use it to get cash out and was told no,so end up paying £1.95 each time to get cash out from the machine in the shop next door.
I have now looked on the post office web site and there is a huge lists of bank accounts that can be used to get cash free at the post office.
is this at the discretion of the post office manager or should they all offer the same service?

You should be able to withdraw at any post office. I would suggest raising a complaint to the PO.

Looking up the facility at the Post Office website:

it seems that NatWest do not have arrangements with the Post Office for money withdrawals on their debit cards.
  • yeah thats the site I looked at, under the section current accounts, nat west isnt there. but if you look at basic accounts and then click on nat west ,is says step account, and yes to getting cash out free.

I intend to ask at the post office again tomorrow, but wanted to know if he is able to just say no or if he had to stick to post office guides .

over the year I have lived here lord knows how much I have spent on the £2 charges getting cash

  • When you go in tomorrow, just put your card in, without showing it, and ask for whatever cash you want out. Hopefully computer will say yes. Unfortunately all postmasters cannot remember all accounts for all banks.
  • system should say yes
ask them and they prob say no so pop card = cash :)

They have no discretion - it's what the computer tells them.

If you put the card in it will bring up a screen for the clerk with the options available. If what you want is not there it can't be done.

Whoever told you that it couldn't be done had either forgotten or never been told about basic accounts - mainstream Natwest accounts certainly can't be used but I'm pretty sure basic ones can..
  • good idea,I didnt think of that. will try and see what happens. in fairness it is a complicated list of which bank accounts can be used for the postmaster to remember and I guess I should have checked this before now. hopefully it wiill work and no more £2 fees

    Sorry, TRYINGTOSWIM
    - I missed the NatWest entry on the current accounts - SpecSavers, here I come!

Is there not an ATM at a supermarket near you? The ATMs at the leading supermarkets are all free withdrawals, as are those at bank premises in the High Street.
