My laptop is being repaired so having to use the kids and didn't realise how old and rubbish it is. In fact, if I don't reply it's because it's turned itself off...again!
Will mostly be used for schoolwork, I-tunes, browsing internet, I-player etc, photos and making photo disks and e-mails. Don't know the first thing about what to look for so any advice gratefully received. Price not so much an issue but obviously a bargain would be a bonus!
Thanks in advance!

why do you not give your laptop to the kids and buy yourself a new one?

Is your kids computer, virus free etc? If there's a chance there are baddies on it (which may be why your computer is crushing), run malwarebytes: Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50 - FileHippo.com UPDATE tab, CHECK FOR UPDATES then run a FULL SCAN. Remove everything it finds and post log here. Other steps to follow if interested!0

I think it is ok as has security stuff on it. I just think it keeps overheating (It's getting on a bit!)0 -

Thats usually because people don't bother to clean out the heatsink and fan so it gets blocked with fluff and overheats because the fan cannot get air flowing over the heatsink. It then slows itself down to stop cooking itself to death then gets to a point where it just starts shutting down. They usually look something like the top left when I take the fan out:
Cleaning out the fluff in the gap between the heatsink and fan on home laptops aged 12 months or older is for my business the equivalent of the blue rinse at a hairdressers - bread and butter money there's always a constant supply of them. I even do it for free as a matter of course if I'm doing another repair on it.
And to prevent this all you need is an "air duster" can and give it a quick blow out once a month.0 -
I bough this a week ago (ordered one day - delivered the next) and I think it's a fantastic laptop for less then £300.
Intel Core i3 -370m (2.4GHz) processor, windows 7 etc.
You don't need to spend more than £300 for a good laptop.
Dont forget the nectar points and possibly Quidco 2% for technology.
