How will reclaiming bank charges impact banking discussion

What none of you seem to realise is that EVERYONE will be worse off if the decision delcares their charges unfair. The point is that the Banks won't suffer and all they'll do is to make EVERYONE pay for everything!
Each cheque, each direct debit, each debit card, monthly admin fee and so on and so on - tell me I'm wrong in 12 months time, because believe me, the Banks will not have their profits slashed by this.
Hurrah for you? I don't think so.
What on earth are you talking about? Who are you???0 -
I cannot believe that you can rack up those amount of charges and then expect them back! You must have grossly abused your account to do this.
Everyone seems to forget that Banks are businesses not charities. When you sign up for your account you agree to pay these charges if you abuse your account.
Imagine if there was another ruling, but the other way round where it was decided Council Tax charges weren't high enough, everyone in the country would be up in arms if forced to pay more. This is potentially what Banks are being asked to do, pay back money in a way that is not previously budgeted for. Customers will then be the first to complain when their bank goes the same way as Northern Rock.
Utterly ridiculous - here's a revelation - I have never incurred Bank charges as I manage my account responsibly. Try doing that rather than moaning on about things not being fair.
The people of this country should be ashamed and need to start taking responsibility for their own actions.
Sod off and mind your own business.0 -
Can we keep this polite please, everyone is entitled to their opinion provided they are pleasant about it0

I thought i was being polite pointing out the person error's in thinking. I didn't call him any of the names i was actually thinking and at all times was respectable of the forum's rules and regs. The bloke has got the right to his own opinion but he shouldn't be able to demean others when he doesn't know their situation or experiences.0 -

It makes an !!! out of u and me0 -
Hmmmm to be perfect. The_affs i find it quite amazing that you have never had a fee in any way shape or form. I've never incurred a charge either - does that make me exceptional? Most people have had at least one charge in their life and most find them extortiant. I assume you mean exorbitant or extortionate but would agree with you on either descriptionThe system the banks have is if they have charged you once they will charge you twice for going over your limit and therefore its unfair practice.
My job doesn't allow me to monitor my bank account daily/weekly and in some case's monthly so to say that its peoples fault that this occurs is pure ignorance as it doesn't take into account peoples situations or external events. You must be in a very privilged position where you can do this and therefore you shouldn't be abusive to others whom can't.
You have internet access so why can't you manage your accounts on line? I don'tr consider I'm in a priveleged position by having these facilities, I just understand the importance of paying attention to managing my finances. It isn't rocket science either - I estimate I spend about 15-20 minutes, twice a week.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -
I think this affects people on lower incomes more than those with quite high incomes, as when a bank knows when your paid and gives you dates just before your paid (you need the money you have to get by) and takes it out before any way they know you have no means of creating money from thin air and put you in a downward spiral hence some people have such high charges, they may have internet access but have no money to do any thing about the deductions being made then get hit with double whamy's of unpaid DD's and then unauthorised OD, when they should just return it unpaid which would be fully automated instead of shafting people.0

Again i make the point you are making huge assumptions:
1. I ran my debt up in 2003.
2. Am in the Royal Navy and was rather busy at sea at that time for obvious reason's. (If you want further explanations then check the date again and check world events).
3. I neither had access to the internet nor was getting mail frequently and there was communication blank outs so couldn't get info at the time.
4. With no immediate family to check my accounts regularly i was reliant that i was managing my affairs properly.
5. On returning to the uk some 10 months later 2004 i found out all this and attempted to rectify the situation however the bank wasn't interested as it was all my fault.
6. Am still paying my debts and have significantly reduced them already.
So again don't judge peolple before you know their situation. If you still believe that i am in the wrong and that i didn't try anything to rectify the situation then unfortunately i would recommend you take those rose tinted spectacles of your eyes and check out the real world.0 -
I agree with The Affs, as it seems that more and more people are taking less and less responsibility for their own actions. By not maintaining a bank account (or indeed any type of account) in an orderly AND AGREED fashion, I'm sorry, but you SHOULD be charged a fee.
The second point I'd like to make is that there is some discussion within the thread about the availability of internet access to obtain information on the state of ones current account, but surely anyone coming on here DOES have internet access, and if you have time to come on here, what's more important, getting your finances in order or telling people to 'sod off'?
What we are becoming, is a nation of whingers and complainers and a lack of personal responsibility for almost anything we do, and it's about time people realised that this is not the way to go.
If you've been charged a fee by the bank, then that's the way it is, and I personally find it an unacceptable situation that we are ALL going to have to pay to use the banks in future in order to pay for the misuse of accounts by others.0 -
Thought i'd just drop this in the OFT have won the case0
