Connecting to home wireless netwrok problems

Hi All, I wonder if you can help with a friends computer problem.

He has a "twinhead" (?) laptop which he has always been able to connect to his home wireless network, but then it suddenly stopped working and the internal wireless LAN is not working.
I have reinstalled windows XP and fitted a PCMCIA network card. It will now connect to unsecure networks and work perfectly, however when I try to connect to a secure network the connection keeps alternating between connected and unconnected. Other laptops connect and work fine on these networks but not this one. I have tried more than one secure network to eliminate router problems and have reset the modems and routers on these networks but still have no joy with this machine but others connect straight away.

If the internal wireless LAN adapter has failed, are you sure it is totally disabled? Maybe it is still interfering somehow.
