pre payment gas metre taking out

Hi can anyone help,i'm trying to get my gas prepayment metre taking out as it's costing a fortune to keep running.i want to change to paying it at the post office every week.
i've no debt on it as that was cleared 2yrs ago,i phoned british gas to get it removed and they want a £300 deposit first
i don't mind paying something up front but i ca't afford that much
can anyone help how to get this metre out without paying £300, or is there another supplier i can change to and get the metre changed cheaper.
my credit rating isn't that good.
any help would b good thanks:(

Pre payment meters are supposedly more competitive than they used to be.

Ebico may be worth a call however - same charges however you pay & a not for profit co. who may be more sympathetic to your circumstances. https://www.ebico.org.uk/

The £300 has nothing to do with changing the meter but your credit rating. To ensure you dont run up new debts they want £300 which they will return after 6-12 months assuming you pay all bills on time. They may also require you to go on a DD tariff. Looking at you post you want to pay weekly so a DD tariff may not be what you want. Changing supplier is unlikely to change anything.

Even if you had a good credit rating most suppliers now charge £50-60 to exchange a meter.

The tariff on a ppm is the same as a standard credit tariff all you dont get is thinks like DD discounts which you would not get anyway because you want to pay weekly.

    Abot paying DD :

A lot of suppliers sayyou have to pay by DD in order to get a prepayment meter taken out. I know mine (Southern) stated that had to be the case. You can just agree to pay by DD and then soon after the meter has been changed, you can ring your supplier again and cancel the DD. Well, that's what I did - and Southern didn't query this at all.

If you're happy paying by DD, then fine. If you would rather not then it is easy to get around this rule.

In my opinion you will have to pay the deposit. Any company would want to do a credit check before removing the meters and if that is not so good they will either refuse outright or want a deposit.

I dont blame them, a read in the paper said once people have them removed they never pay again
