Thanks df- the rent it is then! I am looking forward to clearing off the arrears next friday!!

That means i will have an extra £48 p/m as well, as thats what i am currently paying extra towards the arrears! That can go towards another debt (although i am struggling to decide which one).

Sorry for all the Q's but am wondering in which order to go about paying them off really. My plan was to pay all the arrears off first, and then pay the nursary (the largest debt of £2000) last.
My reasoning for doing that was so that all the monthly payments for the smaller debts will no longer be being paid, so i can put all of that money towards paying the £2000 of quicker..what do you reckon?

Pay your rent arrears off as it secures the roof over your head.

Thanks CH27- looking forward to doing it (and i NEVER thought i'd hear myself saying that!).
  • With the water arrears have you looked into what trusts they have available? I know that some of the water trusts give out money to help people petition for bankruptcy so perhaps they give out grants as well? It might be worth having a dig around the SWW website and see if you qualify for any help or anything?

  • rent first then either SWW or Cabot - you really should be tackling SWW as you probably want them onside and they are a utility debt so realtively important but since Cabot have offered you a good discount if you pay in the nextr few months. Hmm.
I think I would pay the rent off first, investigate any grants etc for water and wait and see what the situation is at the end of next month when things have begun to settle down a bit. You don't want to go mad and pay everything off to be left short to pay for the essentials like rent and get in a mess again so be cautious and see how things are going. Pay the essentials and then see what's left.

Do check out the water, they are one of the few providers that will go for bankruptcy if they think you are not paying it off. Not yet, but into next year it could be a problem.

Right I've found this link which lists a few trusts etc
    http://www.britishgasenergytrust.org.uk/files/BGET%20A%20SHARED%20PROGRAMME%20OF%20GIVING.doc
I can't for the life of me find anything on the SWW website and it's not listed on the links above. However some of the companies state they will give you grants if you are a customer of theirs or possibly if you are in their area? I'm not sure how old the link is though - it was taken off the national debtline factsheet which linked to british gas website which linked to the list.
Also I would check what schemes are available and there is no harm writing to SWW and putting your case to them and seeing what they come up with - ie do they do anything similar?
the main scheme that SWW run is watersure I think but not sure whether you'd qualify for that? Link to National Debtline factsheet on water bills here:
    http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=23_water_rates_new_rules
Hopefully some of this is of use to you.
    Further links on this thread:

these relate to getting help with paying bankruptcy fees particularly but i'm not sure whether they do grants for other purposes as well - you might have to do a bit of research.

OK- i have looked on the SWW site and the only thing they offer is watersure, which i am not entitled to be on as i dont receeive JSA/IS or any other benefit (barr CB) and i dont have 3 children, and none of my children are under 5 yrs old.

I will have a good look at the link to do with the grants when the kids are in bed. Thanks so much df!
