Diamond ring insurance for backpacking

I am going travelling to some remote islands in South-East Asia with my girlfriend. Whilst there I plan to propose and so have bought a ring to surprise her with.
I am worried that as I am hiding it from her it could go missing or be stolen. So far no insurances would cover something worth over £1k would I be better buying seperate insurance for this (if so who from?) or are there ways to get it included on my own travel insurance.
I plan on using the Sainsbrys insurance included with their credit card referenced on this site.
Thanks for any help

Do you have home contents insurance?
Do you have the person possesions option?0 -
I work for Sainsbury's Home Insurance.
If you have Contents insurance with us, you are covered up to £1,500 single high risk item limit. For example, any high risk item (jewellery, audio equipment, laptops, TVs etc) over the value of £1,500 needs to be specified as a specified item.
You would need Personal Belongings insurance to cover your personal items (including your ring) outside of the home and outside of the UK on holiday - providing you are not on holiday for more than 60 days in a row.
Congrats on the possible engagement though, I hope she says yes!!0 -
We are both living at home with our parents so no insurance of our own and the killer is that the trip is for 5 months so its only going to be secure for the first 60 days of that.
was hoping for a specific insurance for backpackers but most of these only cover items up to a certain amount and even then tend to exclude any valuables that you would actually have with you - ipod camera jewellry etc.
Thanks for the congrats. Think the way things are going i might propose in stanstead and then its her responsibility not to lose it rather than mine....0 -
Your parents insurance will still cover you as you are a family member so you can add the ring on a specified item. Or, if you parents already have unspecified personal possessions cover and the value of the item is lower than the single article limit then do not specify as you are paying to insure something that is technically already insured.
Just beware though that once you give her the ring she would really need to make sure it is covered on her parents insurance as you live apart and the ring belongs to her.0 -
Above is correct - can be covered under your parents as you are a family memeber resident at the same address.
OR you could just take a dummy ring with you to save the hassle!! Something from Argos maybe?!0 -
Not as romantic, but could you take a picture of the ring with you and propose with that and tell her that it's waiting for her at home (...if she says yes).
I don't mean to worry you, but a tourist walking around with a big diamond ring will attract attention of the wrong sort, and assuming this holiday will be back-packer style you may not be staying in the best parts of town. For both of your peace of minds I would advise travel with cheap kit (i.e. no iPhone, laptops, expensive camera/watch/jewelery, etc...).
She may be a tiny bit disappointed not to have the real thing (the fairer sex are never known for their patience......well maybe some of them are) but I think when she has had chance to think about it she will glad not to have the worry of wearing that and feeling at risk of theft."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
Agree with Clive. It would be silly to take it with you.
Better to buy perhaps a ring from a local craftsman while you are backpacking, to present her with this and show her a picture of the ring that is waiting for her back at home. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
Leave it at home, buy a cheaper version for the hols and explain why, then when you get back give Gf the correct ring.

Get a 'fake' ring (cubic zirconium) and propose with this. I bought a decent 'real' looking fake, cost about 30 quid, to propose with. She'll understand about not wanting to bring a real diamond on a backpacking holiday.
You could always take the ring to a jeweller and see if you can get a fake that looks like the real one.
The real one ended up costing about 5k. Doh.0
