Washing machine making grinding noise on spin!

Options
My washing machine (Zanussi Jetsystem XC1400) is making a grinding noise when it is on the spin cycle, no matter the speed. I fear the bearings have gone, or are about to. Any ideas on whether it would be economical to repair or not? Been looking at Miele machines, any suggestions as to a possible replacement if need be? Thanks for any info anyone can supply. :-)

could be the bearings. More likely to be a foreign object traped in the front of the drum.............bra wires are common.

I had a Zanussi washing machine and yes, when the grinding noise started I was told by an engineer that the bearings were gone. His conclusion was that it was not ecnomical to repair the machine. So I got a new one from Tesco.

Point to note: order new one well in advance unless you know the retailer you are buying from really has the one you want in stock! Tesco messed me round a bit: I ordered an Indesit but was only told weeks later that they were unable to get it in stock (Tesco acts as a "reseller"). As my old machine really wasn't going to last longer, I compromised and bought something else instead that wasn't exactly what I wanted but only because it was in stock and ready to be delivered.

    Miele is a good brand.

if you open the machine door and turn the drum with your hand you can usually tell if its the bearings, there should be no up down/side to side play in the inner metal drum and it should spin quietly and smoothly with your hand

Thanks very much for your quick replies, very much appreciated. The machine is still useable, just noisey. When I wash my bras I always put them in a mesh bag and seal it up well, so I doubt it could be a bra wire, all my bras are intact. I know I found small pebbles in a wash of the kids clothes just recently... , found them in the seal round the door, two but. Checked the filter, nothing.

I'll check out a Miele washing machine as a replacement, just wondering about a local supplier of them. Delivery from down South would probably incurr extra charges as I'm classed as not being in mainland Britain, although I am, when it comes to delivery of goods. My folks gave me a number of a local repair man, very good by all accounts. I'll give him a phone and see what he says. Last time I had the machine serviced, it was just a loose connection, cost me £50, ouch.
