You can only get a free trial if you sign up for an ongoing contract and then cancel your subscription, so you do have to put in card details. You then have 30days to cancel.

The alternative is to order your statutory reports which cost 2pound per agency.

I've had two free trials from Experian (credit expert), the last was a couple of months ago, and cancelling was very easy. Just a quick phonecall, they confirmed the cancellation by email and I still had access until the end of the 30 day trial (I phoned to cancel after about 20 days, to be on the safe side).

I'm not sure how easy it is to cancel the others. I have a capital one card, which entitles you to 2 free reports from Equifax a year - I only found out recently, but it was very easy to get the report online. Maybe worth getting a capital one card just for this? They're supposed to be easy to get for those with poor credit history. I'm not sure whether you only get the free reports on certain cards.

CallCredit's website is terrible, and lacking info regarding cancelling, so I decided it was safer to pay the £2 (by cheque) and get a statutory report by post from them (the request form can be printed from their website).

You've had two free trials?? You usually only get one and that's it. If you cancel and sign up again, they'll see you've had a free trial and will charge you immediately.

Enlighten us on how you were able to do this as I'm sure hundreds of other members will be interested - the same members who've attempted and failed to get a second free trial.

I had the last one in summer of 2007. I was going to pay to see it in December (2010), but when I signed into my account, it told me I was eligible for another free trial. I assume it's just to do with the amount of time that had passed? I hadn't signed in since the first time until then.

Oh! I had my free trial sometime in 2009 so I think I'll try signing in and see if I've got any offers. I've never read any members getting a second free trial, didn't think they were that generous.

Yep, I was pleasantly surprised :) No idea how long you have to leave it before they offer it again though. I can't remember whether I was going for the statutory report or the over-priced online one when the offer of the free trial came up. I didn't try outright for a free trial, because I assumed I wouldn't get one - during the sign in process a screen came up offering it to me.

Not only can you check it for free with a free trial, but you can sign up through Quidco and get £5 cashback too :)

This is anecdaotal, but the stories I've heard about being difficult to cancel apply to Equifax and not Experian.
If there is any chance you might forget or have a job where it's difficult to use the phone, then I would advise simply spending £2 and getting the statutory report.
If you forget to cancel the free trial it will be relatively expensive, whereas the £2 is a one-off fee and there is no subscription.

You can get a free credit report online from Experian, Equifax and CallCredit. Experian and Equifax are both very good, so if you've already received your free report from one of them, just try the other.

With regard to cancelling your free trial, it's just a quick phone call to either.

To answer Amandak's original post, you can order a statutory credit report from any of the credit reference agencies without giving your card details but it will cost you £2. You normally have to wait about a week to receive it too. Online is definitely better if you can!

    how do i do that?
id rather write, i dont wnat to put in my card details
