Hi all,
i currently bring home just over £1k per month from my job and work 9-5.15 4 days a week and 9-5 on Fridays. im grateful to have a job in the current climate but am pretty unhappy there. I have also been moved offices which means I now have to drive an extra 20 miles per week which obviously means its costing me more in petrol.
my question is probably a matter of opinion to a certain extent but am wondering whether to go for a job that pays min wage for 35 hours per week but would probably knock off about 25 miles a week off my journey to work. Its 9-5 every day.
I understand I wont bring as much home every month but am wondering if other things outweigh that. Im very fortunate in that I have no mortgage/rent to pay out every month so its just all the other normal bills etc I have to find.
Anyones' opinions greatly appreciated
thank you:A

You need to say what your gross salary is now, and how much you spend on fuel. No doubt somone will be along who will go to the bother of working all this out anyway, but it's Sunday, and if you want informed opinions, you need to do a little bit of the work yourself.0

NMW £5.93/hour (assuming aged 21 or over).
35 hours at NMW = £207.55 = approximately £899.39/month gross.
That would give you £780.93 nett, about £220 less than you get now.
How much does it cost to travel?
How much is the travel time compared with currently? So would your actual free time be about the same even if you work more hours?
It's your decision - how much your time and happiness are worth.0 -
thanks littlevoice. I wouldnt be saving the difference of just over £200 per month on travel so from that point of view it wouldnt be worth it financially. However, like you say, you have to weigh up happiness at work too dont you.
thanks for the info

25 miles a week? I wouldn't change jobs just to save 5 miles a day! There must be something else in your consideration?0

Yes, GavB79, the something else in my consideration is the stress at work. however the 25 extra miles a week does make a difference when you think i have had no extra pay from work to cover the extra petrol & what with petrol prices spiriling out of control ............0

Do both have just statutory holiday pay and statutory sick pay? Check out all the benefits you get in detail. I do agree you have to also look at how much it costs you to be at work e.g. if one place provides free hot drinks and free uniform that might save you a lot in a year compared to buying £2 coffees and buying suits.
Generally min wage increases every year (though not by much) whereas a larger salary may be frozen for years...OTOH it might rise way above inflation.
Jobs that pay exactly min wage are usually sending the message they care little about their workers...not always the case but worth considering.
Being paid more can sometimes be beneficial e.g. if you want to get a loan or a mortgage or apply for a higher post.0 -
also depends what your career aspirations are, going to NMW seems a backward step to me, if you are not on it now0

extra 25 miles a week, 5 miles a day? even if your car is heavy on the juice its only going to cost about an extra £5 and if petrol prices doubled overnight its only an extra £10, stay where you are!Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
