Wales Help Req'd - Double Glazing - South Wales

My house is 18 years old now and the wooden double glazing has seen better days. In fact I had to replace a few "misted" units a few years ago. Also I notice the gap between panes is nothing like I see in newer houses.

It has been so cold this winter and the front and back doors would definitely need to be replaced this year as a minimum.

I wondered if any fellow moneysavers could recommend/warn about local companies. I live in Barry so would want a firm from South Wales to do the work.

So any opinions would be helpful as I dread getting the hard sell from endless double glazing salesmen.

Thanks in anticipation!

The firm I have used quite a bit is

    http://www.tricketts-windows.co.uk

Based in Merthyr, so not sure if they cover Barry.

Oh BTW they will barter on price

You will probably not be able to fit thicker DG units without replacing the windows completely. The windows are designed to accept a specific thickness of DG.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

We used to live in Dinas Powys and used a company called Dinas Windows as so did several of our neighbours and friends at the time. This was over 10yrs ago. They were fine then you could check to see if they are still trading.

    Good Luck

I've used ACE windows, based in Port Talbot. They fitted upvc windows and doors and timber sills and surrounds (at my request).
They actually get the door panels from a company based in barry.

I dont know if they'll come down to Barry.

We used Nolan windows in our flat last year, just before selling, and then used Leekes in the house we've just bought a few months ago. I would neither recommend nor dissuade someone from using either.

    Nolan
Good - the windows were a good price, no hard sell and the fitters were friendly and cleaned up after themselves
Bad - The windows got condensation on the inside. The sill they brought had a scratch in it (which in fairness they pointed out to us and offered to replace without us asking) but it took them a few weeks to replace it and the salesman was unpleasant to us when we complained about the wait (which we were particularly unhappy about as we were doing viewings at the time to sell the flat).

    Leekes
Good - Excellent quality windows at a good price, problems were sorted quickly and without any hassle (we didn't like the lead pattern in the glass and they accidentally ripped out our wooden sills which we'd wanted to keep but they gave us brand new wooden sills). Again no hard sell.
Bad - They called in sick around 9.00am the first day they were supposed to be there which would have been really annoying if I'd taken a day off work for them. When they did come, the fitters were really surly and treated my home like a building site (eg. they left the front door wide open when they went off for lunch for an hour, had their radio on full blast (including when they were at lunch) they didn't clean up properly and I really didn't like having them in the house.

Both firms have recommendation schemes and were recommended to us. We gave the names of the friends/family who recommended them and chased several times for them to pay out the recommendation fee but both failed to do so. With Leekes, you can haggle the price down so don't take the first quote. We got a discount for paying upfront instead of taking on their 0% credit offer and then managed to get it knocked down a bit further.

    Good luck looking!
