Present ideas for 98 year old grandad??

Options
My grandad is 98 and doesn't want for anything, but i'd love to come up with something original as a present but so far i've not found anything that I think he'd like. Any ideas would be a great help.

what about a book made up of photos of his life???
not in a bad way.. but just a little keepsake that he can look through, happy memories and sentimental. you can take old pictures into specialist shops and get the reprinted, ( not that up to date on exact details!!) but you could get a stunning book, and have it professionally illustrated etc. may be a little expensive but im sure he is worth it??
    :T
The places i have been so far: Palma, Tunis, Rome, Corsica, St.Raphael, Naples, Pompeii, Barcelona, Villefranche, Ajaccio, Livorno, Genoa, Madiera, Martinique, St Maartens, St Kitts, St Vincents, Dominica, Barbados, Antigua, Tortola, Jealous anyone????? :T
  • Or if you are creative you could make up a scrapbook. Bits and bobseg. papers, stickers, photo corners etc. are easily found in craft shops and you can get loads of different scrapbook albums. You can fill it with pictures, handwritten funny stories, newspaper clippings etc etc. This would be lovely and as piper5 says, something for him to enjoy looking at..

Does he enjoy sweeties? You can make peppermint creams, plain and chocolate covered, coconut ice, again, plain and chocolate covered, turkish delight etc. Perhaps a nice fruit cake. A lot of people here have been making individual Christmas cakes.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

my gran is 89 and more spritely than ever! However, she must have everything possible. My mum has started the 'consumable' present rule for her. So no ornaments etc, but personal gifts, requests and food are allowed.

She has a favourite perfum she wears - my sister is getting her this
she loves anything to do with her grand children - last year I made up a calendar using my PC with pics of the family on it (It went down a treat).
She loves chocolate gingers - so this year I am making her a 'luxury' food hamper with those and some fancy biscuits and jam etc in it.
she also wants a new nightie so my youngest sister is getting her one with matching slippers!

a few ideas that you might be able to adapt perhaps?

This year I'm giving my nan (87) a framed photo of my sister and I (the one she has in her lounge is about 20 years old!)
She very rarely sees us together and has everything else you can think of!
  • I wonder if getting out and about is starting to be a problem.

Perhaps purchase a day out with him.

Find out what his favourite museum, theatre, restaurant, whatever he can manage is and purchase a voucher or ticket and go with him.

Quality time is something that is valued more than anything
  • Do you know what street and town he was born in/grew up in? If its somewhere in the UK you might be able to get copies of photos from that era through a local library. My brother did this and they went down brilliantly-a real trip down memory lane. He went onto the internet too and found loads of other photos of the area from back in the day, from all sorts of websites. I think Asda do them too on their website, but my brother found that it worked out much cheaper to go via the library.

Good luck and I hope that your Grandfather is delighted with his pressie. I think its lovely that you are putting so much thought into it.
  • What about getting a bottle of whiskey or whatever he drinks (cheap or decent depending on your budget - he will prob love this pressie so much that he won't ever open it anyway) and soak in hot water to remove the label. Then using your computer design a new personalised label for it. Say Happy Christmas 2006 from xxxx and put a picture of him on it with a santa hat drawn on Paint or similar. You could add something about it having been 'Matured for 98 Years' on it or something too. Hope that helps? xxx
  • My Grandad's 82.
I've just brought him a book that's just come out called the 1941 Home Guard Book (Or something like that). He was in the Home Guard during the war so it should be right up his street. What military experience did he have? Could you get a book on that?
Fortunately my Grandad is REALLY into christmas lights, so every year for his birthday and christmas he gets more and more lights which he then has to put up much to my Nan's entertainment. Easy gift though.
  • similar idea to shopping noodles i got my grandparents an areial photo of their house, sent for it before chrimbo and then got a nice frame for it. they've lived there for 50 years so it was interesting for them
It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'
