Cavity wall insulation & loft insulation

Just a recommendation for anyone considering this. I had loft and cavity wall insulation done recently. This was all free through the Warm Streets grant. I think it has made a tremendous difference. We have electric wall heaters (I know, I know), and only turn them on at night once to heat the bedroom.
The biggest difference is with the condensation. Our building was built in the 60s, with no insulation in the walls. The outside walls used to be absolutely wet in the morning. You can imagine the problem with mould we used to have! My husband was cleaning it off the walls every weekend, and we couldn't put any furniture against those walls. Since it's been done the walls are dry in the morning and we haven't had any mould! It took maybe a week for the walls to dry completely.
When they did the loft insulation, they also put better insulation around the water tank.
We did the energy saving survey through the Energy Saving Trust and this was one of the biggest recommendations, along with updating the heating system.
If it's available in your area, I'd go for it.

i went for it but twice they let us down.
first eaga , with a slight snow they called 11 am(2 hours after they suposed to arrive) to say roads are full of snow
the second, arranged through eon ..done the survey ..all fine etc , no thing mentioned whatsoever for any preparation from us.
they come in one day...oh..this conservatory is not safe to jump up... oh, we need a written notice from your neighbour if we were to put the ladders on their land etc..
i did show them survey paper that had not a single note except the price 150.00 . the amount of square metre and my name/surveyors name
they still kept barking so i told them to clear off.
i got a letter from the company saying me i m liable for 475.00 on lost revenue etc
i sent a letter to eon having them liable for 700.00 on lost revenue for myself for not going to work etc and work not completed (attached aswell a copy of survey and their complaints)
i got a goodwill 30.00 of my eon bill but that all
have left it for this year... will enquire in summer when the insulation companies are not soo busy and too desperate for work but yeah..it should make a diference cavity insulation0 -
Thanks, thats really useful. We found out that we could get our walls insulated for free because my son gets DLA. We thought we would go through Tesco and get clubcard points. We got the survey done and were told it would cost about £220 because our house is larger than an "average" 3 bed semi and they would need to install a ventilation brick in the kitchen.
To be honest I wasnt very impressed by the person who did the survey and we decided we would wait until the summer when we have a bit more cash then get someone local to do it.
Our heating is oil fired so its definitely going to be worth the investment before next winter.0 -
I have recently moved into a rented house. Quite old, i'd say 1920-40's, and it does feel cold and draughty at the moment (and we're on pre pay meters so that doesn't help).
I had a look in the loft today, and it is not really insulated, just some junk and some 'chunks' of insulation thrown about by the looks of it.
I don't know if there is wall insulation either.
Can anyone recomend a 100% free insulation company?
We are in receipt of JSA, so would we be able to get it done for free?I Hate Jobsworths!!!0 -

i think that british gas customers can get free insulation if , get your landlord to look into it , or who ever he gets his g+e from , it's in his interest just as much as yours0
