If you have the money in the bank the buy just now you are getting virtually no interest and inflation is over 5%.

Lease deals are not that good just now and the sums need to be worked out carefully.

If you want to keep it for 10 years then a lease is not really an option.

As for Ford pricing that is another story. I can give you £10k off a new Fiesta if I kid in the RRP is high enough.

    Thanks for replying...

But how do they do that (Ford) putting up prices so high and selling it cheap. 10k off on a new fiesta, that's great news to me.

I need a new car desperately, I've decided to go for new coz of the troubles I'm having with my existing Car. Its an 01 plate Mondeo (new design).

It used to be a good car but in the last 8 months or so, all sorts of problems. I'll have to spend nearly a grand to get it fixed. I don't want to spend any more money on it cos Its worth less than 2k.

The reason to get new is that I don't want to spend anymore of my time fixing old bangers. Even if its nearly new I kind of want that peace of mind that comes with a new car.

So if you guys can help me to go in the right direct that'll be of great help to me. I'm not an expert on cars, but trying to learn to as I go along.

I'm looking for Mid size family car which is Auto, coz my OH has only an auto licence and she does most of the driving due to her work demands it.

Need an mpg of 50+, I'm tired of my 2.0 lt Mondeo which drinks petrol like there's no tomorrow. £60 every week for abt 300 mile run - Mostly A roads. and 20% city driving.

1.6 engine or less, most of the manufactures are doing Auto only at the top end models and that when Honda insight came to my attention, they only do Auto and looks attractive.

I've looked at Honda insight due to his extremely good mpg of 65 and its a hybrid that I can afford, and and excellent road tax band £15 compared to £220 which I'm paying now.

But I'm not sure abt the Engine battery part of the car which some says won't last more than 4y or so. and replacing battery will cost around 8k, that put me off n then I looked at civic with ishift which what I'm doing my research on.

The new Prius is a better car than the Honda Insight, with the strange thing being it is slightly better round town than on a long motorway run.

A minicab driving mate used to get over 50 mpg all week every week, basically around 45mog on a run and 55 mog round town.

This was an older 1.5 Prius, and the new 1.8 one is apparently more economical, but I have no mates that have owned one so can't confirm.

Don't forget as mentioned Fords, they have a new gearbox, like a DSG box, whichi should give very good returns.

I used a Passat DSG for a month or so, over 1000 miles a week and got high 30's, low 40's. But this was with a 140tdi engine, which is well known to not be as economical in the Passat as the older 1.9 tdi engine was. I know a bloke that had a manual one and in 80k miles he couldn't crack 45mpg.

Test drive a new Prius and the hybrid Auris, then test drive the Focus and Mondeo, though they have just brought out a new CMax, so old Cmax auto TDCi's will be around at a bargain price, if you can find one.

One thing - if you do go down this route - make sure that you are NOT buying a pre-reg car (ie. where the company you buy the car from doesn't keep the reg for 6/12 months) ...

There are other websites that sell cars online - do a search.

This site has a tool which means you can select your price, if you want an auto-gearbox and what fuel economy you need. It then shows you what new cars match what you want - http://www.carbuzz.co.uk/carchooser.aspx

If you want hassle free then perhaps look at Vauxhall, Kia and Hyundai. They are all offering really long warranties at the moment, which mean you would at least get some piece of mind for a few years.

Vauxhall are offering a warranty lasting until 100,000 miles have passed.

    Hyundai giving 5 years

    Kia giving 7

leases have restricted mileage, then you pay a lot for every extra mile.

250 a week (50 a day) sounds like motorway driving to me,

I did 300 miles a week for most of my working life and never touched a motorway. Most people living in rural counties like mine end up doing that much. YO16 and YO25 to Hull where most of the jobs in the county were.

The cost of finance, depreciation and higher insurance will completely wipe out any savings you make on fuel.

I would definitely try and have an extended test drive and see what sort of MPG you get on your commute route. Hybrid cars give excellent economy in urban areas as you get free energy generated each time you slow down. On long journeys at a constant speed they offer little advantage, they are simply very heavy cars with small underpowered engines
Our Skoda octavia 1.9 diesel with DSG auto box would easily manage 55mpg and would do over 60 on a long run. If you have a long commute I thingk you would be far better off with a 1.9 DSG VAG car
