Hi
I am wanting to watch HD content from my laptop (dell inspiron 15r) on my TV (Panasonic TX42G) .
Can anyone advise me on a suitable cable and also should I be on the lookout for anything else (video cards etc)
Many thanks

HDMI lead is all the connectivity you need.
From experience with an Acer aspire... you may find the laptop copes better if it is only driving one screen at a time, and maybe wireless disconnected too.
I can't remember the secret squirrel keypresses on a dell to toggle between the screen options - might be Fn + F6, or F80 -
Is there an HDMI port on the left side of the laptop near to the left 'Control' key? If so, then an HDMI cable is what you need and you can get a 1.8m cable from an amazon.co.uk marketplace seller for £1.34 delivered.

Agreed. I normally also buy the cheapest for short run fixed installations. For my laptops however I go for a rugged construction as the cables are frequently connected/disconnected and carried around with the laptop.
For laptops I have these, no negative reviews (all 4 or 5 star) and they are robust (and not stupid Monster snake oil):
