I think the link is how do you pay for your stuff

Someone who buys on a cc and pays it off over months is actually paying more.
Someone who buys on a CC, then pays it off in a month can make money through cashback etc
Someone who pays in cash pays the price there and then, without being able to use methods to make a little back

The real winners are people who search and find bargains on ebay, carboots, or enter competitions and are lucky enough to win

Too me im cutting back on all possessions anyways, as i dont need them, but i need a pc for my job, at some point i will need a digital camera for my job, no tv, dvd player etc, as i dont need or particularly want them.

Theres nothing wrong with using money to make yourself happy, its just spend the money wisely and look for the bargains, as depriving oneself completely usually ends up making someone crash out of there mse ways

My mother always used to say if you can't pay for it you can't have it. Now she is gone 80 years old and still have no cards, loans etc, her way was right.
I have a computer, Ipod, dish-washer and many of the items listed but each and every one of them I have saved for, some of them a year or more to get the money, so when the deliver it to my house and it comes in IT IS MINE!! Not the credit company, all mine, I then know that no one i going to knock on my door and demand it back for non payment. xxx

  • I don't think it's actual stuff that effects the way you deal with money.. I think it's more with self control. For example we have an Xbox 360 saved up and paid for cash.. and although the games are nearly £50 a piece (Which could easily rack up loads of debt if you weren't controlled!) DH gets his games by trading in old games and on the odd occasion buying one from where he works with 30% discount with cash as long as we can afford it.
It really relates to your attitude to money than actual things but I can see where you'd get into trouble wanting the latest gadgets/plasma tvs etc.

I am just wondering how much debt is the result of needing "stuff". For some - but not all - I think this is definitely a big problem.

    1) A computer at home (both use internet access at work;) We have a computer - part present & part paid for by me - it was cheap though (and is rubbish!)
2)Have just one car (I cycle to work). Our car is 6 years old ie. year 2000 reg.No car - use public transport - which is expensive in itself
3)No camcorder No - me neither
    4)No ipod No, nor this
5)no sat nav No - no need
6)until recently one pay as you go mobile between 2 of us. I have a contract phone which I wish I had never got - back to PAYG ASAP!
7)one tv in the house (non plasma) 3 TVs - daughter has one , one down stairs & one broken - currently on sitting room floor :rotfl:
8)no lap top.BF has lap top but he is a writer and it stops him & daughter arguing about who will use the PC- bought it himself years ago
    9) no play station - No
    10) we don't have many dvd's or CD's.Quite a few I suppose - more books than anything - although sold quite a few over the last year or so
    11) we don't have the full sky package. No Sky at all
12)no digital camera. No - althouth daughther has one - a present from my brother -but she is doing a photography course
    13) No dishwasher. No only bf

Are you in debt yesand do you have any (or all) of the above ? See above

My biggest "want" is holidays. I dream about going to different places & feel really frustrated that I can't travel more. I had my daughter when I was quite young so while lots of my friends were going off on exotic holidays I was at home looking after my baby. (Not that I regret it for one minute - she's the best thing ever :D - even at 17!) I have spent too much on going away over the last few years - a few days here and there - but now I know it's going to be at least 4 years before I go anywhere again :( Oh well
Proud to be dealing with my debts

  • I think that one of the problems is that we have short memories for how fine we all were 20 years ago (if we were born and conscious!). No-one had a mobile phone, if you had a computer it was a Spectrum for the kids or similar, was Sky even around then, people used a map to find out where they were going...and so on...

These things can't possibly be as important to our lives as we sometimes think they are if we all lived perfectly well without them just a few years back.
