What car should I buy to get cheap insurance?
Comments

Generally the lower the insurance group, the cheaper the insurance (e.g. a Fiat Panda, group 1, will be cheaper to insure than a Lotus Elan, group 30 - obviously!) This site may help you with advice and insurance groups and allows you to search by group:

The only problem is that these are new cars - but hopefully this should give you some idea. HTH0 -
Ignore this.
You can take out the policy yourself, and have your Dad as the main driver, and you will get any NCD the policy earns.
(But avoid RAC insurance as they unusually give NCD to the main driver irrespective of who is the policyholder)
If dad is really the main driver it might be worth checking to see if it's cheaper to get him to get the insurance with a company that give NCB to named drivers.0 -
To answer most of you's, the reason my dad is going to use my car more is because his Nissan Primera will consume more petrol than my new (used) car.
My only concern after reading all this advices is:- If adding my dad as main driver, will I earn NCD or do I have to be the main driver to earn it?
- Should I add my dad to the policy? Would it save me signicant amount of money?
- If I crash does it affect my dad's NCD or affects the main driver only?
Thanks, I know it's a lot of questions but it's my first time dealing with 'insurance' of any sort.0 -
1) As already posted, you will earn the NCD as the policyholder irrespective of who is the main driver (though avoid using RAC insurance who give the NCD to the main driver)
2) If he has a good driving record, is healthy and has a clean licence adding him should reduce the premium.
3) Any claims will only affect the NCD of the policyholder, not the named driver.0 -

Thanks, that really cleared it up. You see I was confused because I wasn't sure if I could add my dad as he's insured with his own car. But I realised you can have as many insurances for the amount of cars you have.
Also, I'm glad you've confirmed to me I'll earn NCD as that is crucial to me, since insurance is ridiculously expensive to drive MY own car on the road.
Any idea when I can insure a car on my own cheaply? Now I don't want to as it'll cost me £3500 to insure alone, Like the insurance price would be the same with my dad, but just for me.
Once again, thanks everyone, saved me around £1000, I was looking to pay £2500 on insurance now can pay £1500-£1700. :money:0 -
If the vehicle is registered in your name and you are the owner, then the insurance company will ask questions in the event of an accident, if you have put your father down as the main driver.
Your best bet would be to speak to a broker - although there is technically nothing to stop you doing this if it is the correct position, it is important that you advise insurers if the position changes - also be aware that they are well aware of all attempts made by young drivers to reduce premiums and may well just rate the insurance on your age anyway, particularly as your father has another vehicle.0 -
you dont earn a NCB as a named driver with insurers its call named drivers discount, and it doesnt make much difference to a policy of your own with same insurer or that of a different insurer without it. some insurers allocate NCB to the policy holders name not the main drivers name some dont.
dad uses to and from work = social domestic and commuting when getting quotes.
dad to and from work= not that many miles unless dad uses the vehicle for work related purposes wich = to buisiness use when searching quotes.
you do local trips (only to and from once a day? i doubt it) town trips, seeing friends (reguarly a week), and weekend use wich in my mind would equate to more use than your dad would do just to and from work.0
