Or is this an empty threat to scare people into paying up?

Assuming you are talking about a private car park then unless it has gone to court without your knowledge then NO bailiff is involved. You may well be contacted by a company which has debt collection and bailiff sections in the company but it is only the debt collector which will contact you. (they may well infer they are contacting as bailiffs but this is only a ploy to frighten you into paying)I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

A Threat! as long as Peter the piper said its not a council ticket!
A bailiff can only attend if they are in procession of a warrant from a County court for a debt! Before a warrant can be issued you would have had to go to County court. Lost not paid, then the creditor would have to go back to court and ask for a warrant to seize money or goods!
However some debt collectors some more then others use this tactic to scare you. Even if a Bailiff was sent if you did not have a car sitting on the drive they could clamp there aint much they can do!0 -
hmmm hadnt thought of the car being clamped...and we do have one most of the time on the drive...being a family of 5...but only one belonging to my son.
Esmerobbo..you have helped me more than you know, many thanks for your email too...I cant find the other thread I posted the scan in, but am looking for it..:)0 -
No disrespect to the OP, but it always amazes me how many people think that a bailiff can come to your house and steal your telly just because a private company says you owe them some money!
It's no wonder people are frightened into paying these things. In my opinion this is the sort of basic knowledge for life that should be taught in schools.0 -

I agree, but these barstewards are relying on this fact to scare people!
Our city being rather militant during the poll tax years:) sent an excellent leaflet out giving great advise on how to deal with bailiffs. To do with poll tax were they had a bit of power, and to debt were they dont have much!
I think myself they should be barred from using the threat until after a successful claim! Not using it as a we may do!!0 -

You seem to have misread the reply and focussed on the word clamping.
Bailiffs cannot be sent by a private company unless you've already LOST in Court and you've refused to pay after losing in Court. How likely do you think that would be?
Nor can CCJs just be 'applied for' which is what the debt collector letters try to suggest.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
