I have recently found myself in the fortunate position to clear my mortgage (all but a £1) with Nationwide on 19/1/11 but have since encountered the following problems:

1) I was charged £90 redemption fee in error and was told on 31/1/11 that this would be refunded.

2) They took my mortgage payment again by mistake on 26/1/11 (they didn't cancel DD) and again i was told this would also be refunded when i spoke to one of their financial advisers on 31/1/11 who has emailed their head office advising them of these points.

They told me the money would be back in my bank account within 5 working days but when i chased it up when it didnt arrive they checked and then said it would be 10 working days i.e. Monday 14/2/11. Seems like a liberty given it's their mistake?

write them a letter, explaining the error of their ways....seems odd they would take that final payment with no balance O/S -or is it an SO...answering my own question there..
  • My mortgage account is in CREDIT at the moment. If it's not in on Monday i'll be mad , have found that Customer Service at Nationwide is deterioating, did moan earlier this week about length of time it takes them to sort out but was told dont worry its marked as urgent and will be in your account on Monday.......my a*se.

OP why leave the £1 in the mortgage? You do know that the whole issue of them keeping your deeds is no longer relevant?
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

    similar problem with nationwide.....

wanted to keep a nominal balance so that I can borrow back my overpayments at a later date at their lower 2.5% rate if required.
Paid off mortgage and left a £1 in the account and sent back forms to extend the mortgage term so that I could draw down my overpayments at a later date as advised by them.
They took the £20 fee to change the mortgage term two weeks ago but on phoning them 3 times my mortgage term still hasnt changed and my overpayment reserve has "disappeared" apparently when the mortgage was paid down to nominal balance. Wouldnt mind but this overpayment reserve was around £38K.
Spoken to a supervisor 3 times now and still not sorted.

en8wall - how did you get on?
And if it wasn't resolved who did you escalate it to because my problem with nationwide hasn't been dealt with either. :(
  • Nationwide - proud to be crap!
I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!

I don't think it does. Please explain.

  • You have a lender there for you could ask for extra lending from them without having to go through the verification process and application. They have all your details, they know your credit capabilities. Maybe I am wrong, maybe you could correct me?
