best Combi boiler?

Will have to replace old inefficient boiler next year. Which is the best one to replace with? I want separate heat controls for water & heating. variable timer clock ( ie I want to set different times at weekends- at present I have to change the times each weekend) I dont need to change the radiators and they all have thermostats on them but I dont have a room thermostat, do I need one? We have new DG windows and cavity wall insulation, but it all seems a bit lame if the boiler is using too much fuel ( which it is)

I am sure you will probably get a lot of different opinions as to which is the best make, but I don't think you will go far wrong with a Worcester Bosch. Bit more expensive than most though. http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/ will give you all the details (downloadable).
I am not sure if they do the type of timer you require, but they probably do.
With the TRV's on your radiators you don't need a room stat.
  • I have a Worcester Bosch combi boiler and I think they are supposed to be quite reliable. The power of the boiler needed (btu output) depends on the size of the house.
A combi boiler heats water on demand (when the hot tap is switched on) so there is no need for a timer for the water.
A room thermostat is a good idea as it will control the temperature more accurately and reduce the amount of gas used. If you get a programmable one with a timer then you can set two different temperatures, a comfort one for in the evening (eg. 18-20C) and a lower one for other times to stop the temperature dropping too low, I have this set at 15C which only switches on the heating when it is very cold outside and stops the temperature dropping too low overnight.

Hi Katy....My one regret with this Honeywell Sundial Central Heating control system,(with ST712 Programmer) is that it does not have an 'hour' button.
Does the usual programme overide but to be able to put it on for a short while is useful.
Tim's dual temp. control sounds good.

thanks guys, and yes the dual control does sound cool. Ken, I had a new timer fitted to the boiler, well about 5 yrs ago, its digital and I am able to time it to come on for short periods, just a few mins if we really want. It didn't take the engineer long to replace the old timer, ( it was covered with the breakdown insurance so dont know how mucxh it would cost), but I'm sure it isn't too difficult to fit.

We had a new Worcester Bosch and it was the bain of our lives and the British Gas engineers. I lost track of the amount of visits over the years. From my personal experience I would definitely not buy one.
