Adios Santander

Both my wife an I were happy Alliance and Leicester customers with Premier Direct accounts and savings each plus a joint account. I defected to Co-op in November after a series of comedy (!) errors by Santander paying bills and she is in the process of doing the same. All thats left is the joint account which has a low 4 figure overdraft in use.
An today we got introduced to the concept of underpayment charges! They applied a charge to my wife's account then a series of overdraft charges. They're perfectly happy to bombard us both with unwanted spam mail offering credit, but not a letter regarding charges.
Nor when she rang up would they waive the £39 accrued. A&L were always perfectly reasonable (with plenty of advisors on the phone who were polite), Santander are - if you can get through - unreasonable and frankly rude.
So they can stick it. Overdraft paid off, and all the accounts being closed as we speak. So adios Santander. You have destroyed all that was good about Alliance and Leicester.

If Santander had not come along there would be no Abbey, A&L or B&B.0 -
Were they in serious trouble then? Apart from B&B, I have not heard of any difficulties - I have been a customer of Abbey for over 20 years, and until Santander took over I never had an issue with them.
If what you say is true, maybe it would have been better for all of us if Santander had not got involved. Not as green as I am cabbage looking0 -

When the savings part and the branches of B+B were sold by the government, there were bids by other organisations. The next highest bid was by HBOS,(soon also to be taken over),so B+B would now be part of another more competent bank.I have a deep burning indifference0 -

B&B were forced to sell by the government - and Santander won the bid (or part of it anyway)
But from what I can see, although Abbey got hit by the Enron fiasco, I cannot find anything to say that the takeover of either Abbey or A&L was because they were in dire straights, nor were they forced by the government. The takeovers were voted in by the shareholders - possibly more motivated by the dividends than what would become of their brand. Not as green as I am cabbage looking0 -
With the OP's username I do hope s/he's moving to the Co-op!0
