router problem

Hello, I've never got to the bottom of this one. Before Christmas my internet would not work. The dsl light on my thomson 585 v7 (3 years old) wireless router on the talk talk network would keep blinking but never go solid thus connecting. My phone has worked perfectly throughout.
At first I thought it was a phone line problem. After line tests and inspection by myself I discovered this. Picking up the router I repeatedly pulled out the phone line from the back of it and hey presto all lights go solid and once on, it stays on. I'm doing this rigmerole every day lasting from 5 minutes to half an hour. I still cannot understand why the router eventually works. It most certainly will not work unless I do this performance.
I'm not in contract so by rights cannot get a free router. I'm told they cost £35

Added on to this if I bought one on ebay would it be as simple as plugging it in and away you go. Or would I require new software as I was originally with tiscali.0

1. rebooting the router via it's web interface or by powering off/on is far better than pulling the phone line out of it.
2. If the router is goosed (which it sounds like it might be, have you got a spare/borrow one to try to confirm if it's a router or line fault?)
3. You do not need to install ANY ISP software on your computer to use a router !! All you need to set up a router is your ISP logon and password..yours is (if still ex-tiscali and haven't signed a new TT contract) your primary tiscali e-mail address and you should know your password. Pop them into a new router andaway you go.
4. Don't rush into buying another router until (from your other thread) the TT rep sends you another for testing purposes.
5. If/when you do decide to buy a new router, you can pick them up for next to nowt on ebay. I've got 3 D-Link 2640B's as spares I picked up off ebay from £6 to £13......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Yes, I'm waiting for the rep to come back on. How do I send him a direct personal message? I have an old bt router which when this problem started up I plugged in and found that the green lights came on and I could access at least part web pages which made me think that its nothing to do with the phone line. The tech help at talk talk did suggest that it could be a router problem. I took it that they would send me one. I've been a tiscali/talk talk customer for 3 years.0

Make sure that if TT send you a new router and its free, that they do not lock you into a contract of 12 months or more.0

if you change the ISP login details on the bt hub, it will connect to your TT service. To pm the TT rep, go to one of his posts, click on his user name and a drop-down will appear, pick the send xxx a private message option.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
