What to take/wear Skiing?

We are going skiing for a week between Christmas and New Year. It is our first time and have no idea what we need to take. Have ski hire booked, but would be grateful for a list of ideas of what else we need to take. I have no idea what clothes we need including evenings? Am going to look at hiring skiing clothes and also compare to buying on ebay.

Any help would be very useful!

Thanks.

For evenings, it depends where you're staying - if it's a posh hotel, then you may need some dressy up clothes, otherwise the warmer the better. Make sure you have shoes/boots that have grip for snowy/icy pavements.
As for ski clothes there may be pitfalls ahead - poor quality (doesn't necessarily mean cheap) clothing may not be water proof, or my personal favourite, wind proof (and when you're stuck in a chair lift this is an experience).
Take lots of layers, as what you may need depends on the weather - temperatures, sun, snow, rain! Turtlenecks, thermals, giant socks, definitely long johns or tights for the boys, good hat with ear protection, sunglasses essential or goggles (useful in snowy weather, I've never used them myself).
Then sunblock and oil based moisturisers - anything lighter may freeze. Gloves!
I'm cold just thinking about it all!

Have a look in your local Aldi or Lidl. They frequently get ski clothing in and it's cheap but usable

Basic requirements are hat, gloves, thick wool socks, googles, jacket & salopettes

yep, the above are your basics. You can always tell the ill prepared Brits on the piste - they are the ones with the trendy sunglasses and the frost bitten cheeks and foreheads. Sunblock during Christmas week is the least of your worries, depending on where you are heading it might be colder than a witches nipple
