wireless router for cable?

We currently have an ageing pc and will be buying a laptop over the next month or so.
We obviously need to use the laptop wirelessly and wonder what we need to do this.
We currently use virgin media (cable) as our internet provider if this makes a difference and use the modem they sent us (model number e08c007).
Not too tech-savvy I'm afraid so any help will be appreciated!
thanks!

You need a cable/dsl wireless router, (not an adsl)

pester Virgin for a free one, (it can take some persuasion)

if you are buying a laptop because your old pc is slow :

This is the one I use on my Virgin Media broadband: NETGEAR-G ROUTER WGR614. I paid about £6 on ebay for it.

I'm on the 10meg connection but I think Virgin will provide a better one for free if you are a faster speed.

Ring up virgin and tell them you want a wireless router from them or the new home hub.

You might have to get a new contract with them, but if you are not intending on cancelling it may be worthwhile.

You could also check out this thread before you ring them, see if you can get a better deal at the same time.

    thanks for the help closed!
looking for a laptop to free up a bit of room too!
looking at the dell website as the pc that we have is a dell and has lasted quite well.
  • I love my Dell Studio laptop and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

If you can, though, buy instore rather than through the website if only because it's easier to take back for repair if necessary (mine has never needed any attention, mind!).
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

Not necessarily obviously. If you are siting the laptop anywhere near the router, rather than needing to use it elsewhere in the house, then you'd be better off sticking to the existing ethernet connection-no point in using wireless if the laptop is next to the router.
But if it's an old style VM USB modem, get it upgraded to a wireless router, as it will be strangling your connection speed. But you can still connect that by ethernet.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
