Just Curious....

Options
Hi

New here so please excuse my ignorance. I've been reading a lot but first time posting.

I am a carer for my disabled sons and at the end of last year, I used the Turn2Us Benefits checker which told me I was entiled to Income Support. I started claiming IS in late November 2010.

I recently had some forms through from JC+ (I think) about claiming Mortgage Interest Support.

I was asked to provide more details about my re-mortgage which was done 5 years ago. This was to extend my house. Getting to the point....finally!......I was just curious as to why they ask you to detail on a seperate page about if part of the remortgage was used to buy a fitted kitchen. I had to detail appliances and whether they were removable.

They also asked for seperate figures about what the wall units and base units had cost??!

Don't get me wrong, I have NO PROBLEM giving the JC or DWP this information. I'm grateful that I may be able to get any help at all towards my mortgage payments, but I was just curious as to why they go into this amount of detail, particularly with kitchens.

Sorry if I'm dumb!

Thanks

because you could have borrowed against youur housr for luxuries ( extravagent holidays, sports cars, plastic surgery rtc)
if that was the case then in effect the raxpayer would be subsudusung yoour lifestyle.
adapting a home for a disability or vital repairs is totally different.

I think it's because they'll only pay the interest on loans/mortgages which were for buying or improving your home. A kitchen is obviously an improvement on the house but removeable appliances aren't necessarily house improvements.
  • I see.

Thanks for the replies. Seems obvious now.

Told you I was dumb! Sorry!!!!

Don't apologise, you asked a sensible question and got a sensible answer :) Never apologise for asking about something you don't understand, if people don't want to answer they're not forced to.
