What the 'ell are these ?

http://www.global-luxuries.com/shop.php/eco-friendly-products/blue-clean-enviro-wash-ball/p_278.html

Aldi have them in this Sunday ..but aldi ..cheaper and no description of what they are ..so found the above link ..

read the description ..and you're just as puzzled as before

..with this description :-
How do they work?
1. Activate water:
FIR Radiation severely vibrate the structure of water molecules, cause Hydrogen Bond to damage and fracture, disassociate big water molecule clusters to small molecules or single molecules, slack the surface tension of water, so that to increase the infiltration, pervasion and dissolution of water molecules.
2. Adjust ORP and PH Value
Disassociate the water molecules which pass through Bipolar Electrostatic Field of ceramic balls: 2H2O=2OH-+2H+.
Some H+ combine each other and overflow from water surface: H++H++2e-.
Some others combine with water molecule into H3O+. OH- ions can not only reduce the ORP Value of water, but also increase PH Value owing to the combination of most OH- and water molecules to be H3O2-.
3. Create negative ions for efficient sterilization
Ceramic Balls can create permanent weak current, which would products a large number of Hydroxyl and Superoxide Radical once contact with water. When Hydroxyl and Superoxide Radical act with organic, its strong oxidation is not optional. They can kill bacteria and other micro-organisms by the ways such as attacking cell membrane and destroying the protein of bacteria. Various kinds of organic compounds can also be decomposed by Hydroxyl and Superoxide Radical.
4. Bleaching, softening, removing bad smell and antistatic
The unique crystal, channel and pore structure, as well as the huge BET Surface of ceramic balls decide its great affinity on oil, cream and water, also its absorption and rheolgic functions. Therefore, it can reach the effect of bleaching, softening, removing bad smell and antistatic naturally.
Blue Clean Enviro Wash Ball Series gained the RoHS Report issued by Intertek, and passed the test of National Authorities Organization of Washing Industry in China. The relative Patents for Invention and Design are now processing.

Another version of the eco-balls http://www.ecoballsdirect.co.uk/

Basically means no washing powder / conditioner needed. Mum used to use them, I prefer the smell of washing powder though. They do de-oderise your clothes but your clothes then don't have a smell.
  • I have some snake oil as well if you would like that......;)

Washing your clothes in plain water also cleans them but not as well as something with detergent in it!

There's more meaningless pseudo scientific jargon in there than you find in adverts for women's facial rejuvenation products, and that's saying something. Snake oil seems to sum it up nicely.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I agree. The claims for the Envirowash Balls are a load of tosh. If the Advertising Standards Authority, Trading Standards and other bodies were of any use at all, such claims would be illegal.

I see they've been sold for up to £35 in the past and I thought it would be interesting to try them from Aldi for only £6. The listed ingredients include chalk and a miniscule amount of washing soda, but as the balls are supposed to last for about 150 washes, the amounts released must be so tiny as to be totally irrelevant. It's possible that the rubbing action of the outer shell might help clean the washing but that's about all. I agree with others who say that many items will appear to get clean with nothing more than hot (40C) water. It's a total con trick and anyone who claims or thinks they work must be deluded.

The claim of 600 washes seems to be based on 2 balls (as supplied) at 150 washes each for the first 'batch' plus the use of the supplied refills, giving you a further 300 washes. I've used them only 6 times so far, and the pellets are already starting to fall out of the outer ball, in amongst my washing, which is really inconvenient.
