I went online to check my bank balance today and see i have a refund from somewhere that i have not used my card at for at least a month or maybe even 2 months.
Any ideas why this would be? What should happen to this money?

Why not contact the company and ask?scotland_lass wrote: »What should happen to this money?
If it's genuine, it's yours to keep. If it's a mistake, don't spend it. Until you contact the concerned party it's anyones best guess.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -

It was a petrol station so isn't goods that can be returned. I wouldn't spend it as it's not mine to spend but just found it very strange to see the refund in the bank.0 -

Does it specify the name of the petrol station? If yes, is it one you use? If yes, is it possible they over charged you on a previous transaction? A quick call to your bank and petrol station should clarify the situation.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. Yup, makes sense. If it was a company, it was probbally automatic, and tends not to be a mistake. The only way (I think) they can get the money back is if you agree to pay it back. (don't be evil.) So call them up and ask why it may be, if they say it was no mistake then at least you'd feel better when spending it

^^ as above poster says, if you use some sort of a bonus card with them that collects rewards for XXX ammount you spend, you get the next fill up free? (oh how I wish!!

Is it possible they are checking to see if your card is working by putting through a refund (most people would not be bothered) before rinsing your card and emptying your account?
How much was it for? I'd be tempted to cancel it to be on the safe side, why would they still have your card details?0 -
Thank you all.
It is a local petrol station. The last time the card was used there was 31st December. I looked at my last bank statement and they took £19.81 and £35 both at the same time so i am assuming the £35 they have refunded me was taken on that day by accident. I never knew you could be refunded without going and asking though and then re entering the PIN number??
I don't think they'd be trying to rinse my bank account especially as the name of the petrol station is on there and i live in a very small place.0 -

Yes it can be done by just knowing the debit card details; card number, expiry date, security code.
These would all be on the receipts which the store keep.
Same as if you were ordering things over the phone.0 -
It could have been that you where charged accidentally for the last transaction the guy in front of you made, and that was automatically refunded. I'd still call just to be 100% sure, but that's what it seems like.0
