Dealership put too much oil in car.

One of the possible causes of a high oil level, is a coolant leak.
That can happen but to make oil level go up it would take a fair amount of coolant and as such would have mixed with oil causing Mayo gunge.

Did your dad have car on flat ground when checked and also was engine cold or hot? These things can have an impact on the level on dip stick0
