Ahhhh Help..I've been hiding my head in the sand again :o/

In 2007 I worked for AQA (text answering service) for literally 2 months and made about £300. I decided that with having had to become self employed (as a 2nd job) to do it and all the paperwork involved, it was more hassle than it was worth. So I told HMRC over the phone and thought nothing more of it. From the end of that year I started receiving requests for my tax which was to be expected obviously. So I rang them up, explained what I'd made and that I'd only done it for 2 months and was told as I'd made so little I didn't need to fill in any forms.
From there I've been asked for end of year forms for every year since and although I've made a few calls trying to explain the situation to them, I'll admit I've hidden my head a bit as I just don't understand the whole thing
/. Now they have sent me a final reminder that I need to pay £300+ (although I actually owe nothing as I A) wasn;t self employed during any of this or the previous 2 years) as they keep charging me for not returning the some form, which I admittedly don't even begin to understand.
I've gotten up today and realised that I need to sort this desperately, so was wondering if some kind knowledgable soul could give me some advice on the best way to sort it or at least point me in the right direction
(. I hand on heart have paid more in fees and late reminders costs than I made (paid about 450 so far and only made 322 total), it's just confusing me and stressing me out.
Sorry for such a long rant, just feel a bit lost with it.

If you have been sent a request to fill in a tax return (a notice to file) and you don't complete it then you'll automatically be stung for a £100 fine. The notice to file - or an actual tax return will be sent to you each year in April time and should be completed and submitted before Jan the following year.
Regardless of whether you had anything to put on the form that wasn't earned income you still need to complete it.
If you don't send in a return then HMRC will estimate how much tax you owe and send you out an assessement. Once you complete and submit a return to show no tax is due then they should stop chasing you for any tax they have assessed you owe. But you may still need to pay the fines - I'm not sure how you would appeal against these.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
I think you need to write to the revenue and explain that you finished self-employment whenever and that you informed them and was told you didn't need to fill in the form, you didn't fill in the form because of the advice and then nothing had changed so you still didn't think you needed to fill in the form and that you have made several phone calls to sort it all out. Hopefully you can straighten it all out.

Ok, you need to go online and find the Self Assessment sheets for each year that they have asked for money. You will also need the Self Employed Supplements, and if you also are employed PAYE you will need the employed supplements. print them off and fill them in. Do this even if your Self Employed Income is nil on the relevant year. Fill it all in, send them to HMRC quick, and if you've overpaid, you should be able tp get a refund. If you are employed, you'll need you P60's for your earnings for those years. Hope this helps.0
