Names on cheque, please help

Good Morning,
Last night we received a cheque from Nationwide made payable to myself and my partner. But we do not have a joint account.
Is there anything we can do?
We were thinking of us both going into his bank, and me taking some I.D.
Do you think this will work?
Otherwise it will be ringing nationwide asking them to change the name on the cheque.

All you can do is either:

    1) Open a joint account (even if just a savings account - this won't link your credit histories)
    or
    2) Ask Nationwide for a cheque in just one of your names.

A joint named account can never be paid into a sole named account.
  • you'll have to get the cheque made out to just one of you if you don't have a joint account - and I can understand why you may not want to have one. sorry thats not what you want to hear.

only other alternative is one of those payday loan places which may cash it for you but will take a hefty fee

It depends why the Nationwide has issued a cheque in joint names?

If there is a problem with issuing a cheque in the name of one person only, the alternative is to ask the Nationwide to issue two separate cheques with half the money going to each of you. You can then each cash the cheques and re-distribute the money as you wish.

  • Its to do with our mortgage which is in both our names. But my partner pays it from his bank account
