My son has been surfing and somehow this stupid software has attached itself. Basically it shows a warning window every couple of minutes saying the computer has 'critical' viruses and if i press 'remove' it then takes me to a page to purchase the software!
I know I do not have viruses as I already have anti-viral software installed but cannot get rid of this new marketing software. I have searched the hard drive but cannot find it- I have also ask for its 'properties' but it tells me its stored in a place which does not even exist on the hard drive.
This is driving me nuts - can anyone help me get rid?

Sorry to break the news but you have now. Don't worry there's some really good malware removal advice available on here and I'm sure the guys will be along shortly to help.604!0 -
Yes, it is certainly a virus you have - your son has probably clicked a popup on one of the websites he visited.
Ignore what it's telling you, and don't pay out any money.
Download MalwareBytes and install/update/scan/fix what it finds, and then post the log here.0 -
Many thanks - couldn't access the web today due to the virus but started the laptop in safe mode and ran AVG - seems to have worked as I no longer have those annoying pop-ups.0

That's good, but I would still run Malwarebytes just in case AVG has missed anything. The two will co-exist ok.0
