Food for neutered/spayed cats?

Just wondering - I know there are special foods available stating they are for netered/spayed cats but do you actually use those?

My 4 were neutered/spayed today and I started wondering.

Have you changed your cats' food after having them done?

Or you continue with whatever they have used to eat before?

I know they will be prone to getting overweight etc but to change the food completely?

How different is that special food and is it worth it or is it just another con to get more money out of us?

Thanks for any replies...

    IMO, just another con.

I did have to reduce their diets after mine were done, they started getting a bit porky after a few weeks, I've just reduced the amount they have and they all look trim, fit and glossy again.

  • Nope, just fed them the normal stuff.

Hi you can feed them normal adult food this will not harm them _ not kitten anymore as they are now neutered and are more likely to become overweight. The netuered foods are good though- they are basically a light verson of adult food with some extra benifits such as formulated to help reduce urinary problems ( Neutered/overweight male cats are VERY PRONE to BLADDER issues- IT CAN BECOME VERY SERIOUS IF THEY GET A BLOCKED BLADDER).
If you feed them according to the guide they usually work out cheeper than supermarket brands! YES More expensive per KG but you feed less per cat = less per day! simples!!

Its all a con if you ask me, and apparently a lots cats have had reactions to it, according to a vet friend of mine.

Anyways, i just feed mine ordinary adult cat food. If they putting on weight, just give them less.
Or in the case of my female cat, feeding her more, as she lost tons of weight after being spayed.
  • My 6 were all done at around 6 months and fed normal cat food. Now just get ad lib biscuits as they have free access to countryside so don't have a set feeding time. All are healthy, none overweight even though they could eat 24/7 if they wanted to. Eldest is now a healthy 12 years old.

we got given food from the vets for the first 2 -3 days after the op but reverted back to ordinary food.
I noticed in our supermarket Iams and Purina sell dry food for neutered cats why?? infact whilst we are on it kitten food is a waste of money too. In all the years i have owned cats i have never fed them kitten food when they were young infact it wasnt even around 25 years ago.

I never changed the food after mine were spayed. None of my cats have ever been overweight.

Have fed kitten food because in biscuit form there smaller pieces, but never bothered with fancy spayed food for cats. Our always got fed when they asked. Most cats will self regulate there food input.
