Fixed Tariff price increase

Your help and advice would be appreciated, please.
Last month I switched my E-on gas & electricity to a new tariff -as the old one was due to end.
I duly got a letter from E-on stating that the new tariff gives me "fixed electricity and gas prices until 1 March 2012".
However, today I have had a letter saying that they "now have no option but to increase their prices"!!!
The small print that came with the confirmation of my new tariff does have a clause that states they may change the prices or other terms of the contract - but if that's so, what's the point of going for a 'fixed' price plan?
Can they really do this???

The FixOnline 9 tariff is not affected by the price increase, as you have only changed on to this, it may be that the price increase letter was already on your account to send.
You are correct in saying this tariff is fixed until March 2012.
