I have only bought the hairdressing deals when they have been at well-known, reputable salons (e.g. Mahogany in Oxford) where I know it really would cost £80 or whatever for the service on offer.

I registered with groupon but put my location as Manchester. I was fed up of seeing the ads around the web targeted at the town I live in, so they were reading my IP address. I am very pro-privacy on the web so put a stop to it :)

    Good advice Red.
I went for a meal where it said "value up to £65" and we spent £47.50.
To be fair with a meal it's bound to depend on what you pick and it did say "up to", but it's something to be aware of.
Do check things out and don't take them at face value.
It's easy to see "60% off" and get all excited. We're all guilty of that.

Unlike yours this one doesn't even say "up to" - very misleading I feel:

Latest "deal" from Groupon for an Edinburgh restaurant - claims that their £30 voucher for a meal for two has a "value of £67.60". That is totally misleading as it would only be worth that if both people ordered exactly the same dish as a main course - fillet steak, the most expensive item on the menu.

Most of the starters are £4 or £5 and the mains are £9 to £13 - so just going in and ordering from the normal menu works out at roughly the same price as the "deal price" without the restrictions of buying a voucher, booking in advance, limited availability on times, being limited to a starter and a main rather than a dessert and a main or just a main or whatever..

Very misleading of Groupon to have "Meal For Two for £29.50 (Value £67.60)" in huge letters in bold print when it could only ever possibly be worth that amount in one very specific scenario and in most cases would not be worth much more than they paid for the voucher!

Also see this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2764806 and the Groupon teeth whitening one - lots of people got stung and Groupon customer service can be abysmal.

I had a 2 hour Brazilian Keratin blow wave treatment for £29.99 - very pleased with it.
  • Am looking to purchase the paintballing coupons (would buy several, so hubby could take a few friends) and wondering if anyone else has bought them and how they got on etc.?
  • i just got 3 vouchers (delta force, i think), have called 2 weeks ahead to book places during half term, no problem. extra balls will be expensive, but was also told when i booked about the cost.
  • Bought a massage groupon several weeks ago and have it booked for 3pm tommorow, (my choice) 1hr treatment- 20 mins indian head massage,20 mins neck and shoulder, 20 mins back- so excited!
I'll let you know how it goes!
  • I bought a high tea and cocktails voucher for £16, the ad says was reduced from £40. When I went the deal consited of 4 sandwiches, 2 scones, 2 cakes and a small teapot filled with a strawberry cocktail. Very nice but hardly worth the £16 never mind the claimed £40.

I checked the menu and you could buy the same deal for £22. I think Groupon add a false RRP quite a lot to make discounts look much greater. :(

I have had some really good deals though, got my missus a hairdressing deal for £35 and she felt was amazing value. Really liked the salon and booked another appointment.

I have had extremely mixed experiences with Groupon. I used to think they were great, but I'm afraid they are now a bit big for their boots and the customer service has been allowed to slide.

I have had some amazing deals (really, really fab - the custom made shirts were absolutely superb and great value, and I have had some fantastic bargain meals out, etc) but also some real dodgy experiences too - I bought a christmas hamper before christmas and the company never called me back, I got a refund eventually but its all hassle as by the time I realised I wasnt going to get what I paid for I had to dash about buying another present, and it took a few days for refund to come through. I bought a keratin straightening treatment last September, by January I was still waiting for the appointment but before I received my treatment the salon (apparently) went out of business - for that one Groupon said I could not have a refund but instead would receive vouchers to use against a similar product. I did get the money back eventually, but had to argue for it.

I've had beauty treatments that I have bought and paid for but then had to wait 4 months for the appointment - my most recent disaster (eyelash extensions) was in the dingiest most revolting salon ever and I came out looking like a drag queen! I would have made her take them off there and then but the treatment was so painful and uncomfortable (not to mention unprofessional it was a disgusting place) I just wanted to get out and away from her - I got stared at all the way home and soaked them off within 5 minutes of coming in the door.

The main problem as I see it is that companies often seem go to groupon when they are on their last legs (often because they are low quality providers EDIT - OFTEN, BUT NOT ALWAYS) and are hoping for a sudden surge of custom. Groupon (I'm told) then pressurise the providers into offering ever cheaper and cheaper deals which in theory is great for the customer but the result is that the company cant then cope with the orders, and customers are left waiting yonks for the frequently sub-standard service.

Sorry for the doom and gloom, but as a vrey frequent user of groupon I thought it only fair that I gave both sides of the coin!
