I've heard rumors about being able to get Windows XP cheap if you are a student, but despite my best efforts I cannot find mention of it anywhere. Can anyone point me to a link where I may be able to order a copy with the help of my student card?
many thanks in advance,
Don

Ask your University about Microsoft Academic Alliance Software.
Basically if your University is a partner, you can download many Microsoft programs including Windows XP for free on a student licence.0 -

Hi
So if my uni was a member of this Microsoft Academic Alliance Software thing, would i be able to get a copy of Microsoft Word for free?
Thanks0 -
Hi.
Microsoft only make available so many products and I am not sure if the Office package is one of them. I've just checked my Uni's website and the Office package isn't included in our available downloads.
I'll past below a list of whats available at my Uni:
* .NET Framework 1.1 SDK
* Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
* InfoPath 2003
* InfoPath 2003 Toolkit for Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005
* MapPoint 2004 (North America and European)
* MELL - Developer Edition for MSDNAA
* MSDN Library October 2005
* MSDN Library for Visual Studio .net Jan 2004
* MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005
* OneNote 2003
* Project Variants (Pro 2002, Pro 2003, Server 2003)
* SQL_Server Variants (2000 sp3a, 2000 Enterprise, 2005 Developer, 2005 Express)
* Virtual PC 2004
* Visio for Enterprise Architects
* Visio Professional 2003
* Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
* For Windows Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition
* For Windows Visual J# .Net
* For Windows Visual SourceSafe 6.0d
* For Windows Visual SourceSafe 2005
* For Windows Visual Studio 6 Professional
* For Windows Visual Studio .net 2003 Variants (Prerequisites, Professional, Tools)
* For Windows Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server Beta 2
* For Windows Visual Studio 2005 Team Test Load Agent Beta 2
* For Windows Visual Studio 2005 Tools For MS Office
* For Windows Visual Studio 2005 Variants (Beta 2, Professional, Standard)
* For Windows Visual Web Developer 2005
* For Windows Windows 2000 Variants (Advanced Server, Professional, Server, Standard)
* For Windows Windows Server 2003 Variants (Enterprise, Standard, Web)
* For Windows Windows Services For Unix
* For Windows Windows XP Variants (Embedded, SP2, 64Bit)
I assume if any of your Uni's are MSAA members then you should be able to get copies of the above software for free.0 -
You may have to be doing a certain degree scheme to qualify (usually computing or engineering related)0

Go to Amazon and seach for "windows student" and it will pull out the academic licences
That said it's often cheaper to buy OEM for OS'S, but office is certainly cheaper and at £99 allows you to load it onto 3 PC's0 -
I'd avoid office just now as a new version is due in q1 next year
http://www.openoffice.org - it's free, open source, runs on Windows, Mac (OS X), Linux, Solaris and free BSD
Best of all it offers save as .doc, .ppt etc (MS office) and export to PDF
If your buying Windows XP make sure it's one of the versions that offers a FREE upgrade to Vista0 -
Thanks for the replies guys - seems it doesn't work out that much cheaper than say, Ebuyer or Aria? And it's only the Windows XP Upgrade, which I presume mean you need a legal copy of an earlier version?
Looks like I'll be living with my "Illegal version" wanrning pop-ups for a while longer yet then!0 -
Why not just get a patch which stops the pop-ups?0

I get these for free too. Might be a good idea to talk to your uni and see if they can help you out.. sob story about not having correct equipment might help your case or just a frank discussion with one of your lecturers. Your uni should be able help you out, if they see that you're interested and keen they'll bend over backwards for you (now if that only worked on a friday night...) :j Nowt to loose eh.. good luck._________0
