Heeeeeeelllllllppppppp

Hi
A bit of help required

I was stood on a chair in front of our washer in the kitchen, when i thought the chair broke and threw me off, anyhow the tile on the kitchen floor has broke and the floorboard has broke causing a hole! We have had no washer leak or any other leak.

Does this sound like all the boards may be rotten??
New floor needed???

Any advice would be appricated

Thanks katie

  • I think you need to post a picture of the damage.

  • oh dear

well as the tile has broken, would suggest you chisel up the rest of the broken tile and have a look at the wooden underneath to see if the surrounding area looks rotten, wet etc. That will give you a start as it might be the floor is all rotten but equally that someone previously did a bad repair job on a section of floorboard. Can you get under the floor through a trap door to get a good look at rest of floor? At least you then have an idea of how bad things may or may not be before you get a professional out.
  • Turquoise - thanks for your reply - sound like a good idea will try this and see what the damage is.

Norman Castle - that comment could be really upsetting!

there COULD have been a hole under the tile and you might have happened to put the chair leg in exactly the 'wrong' place - because the weight would be focussed on a small area if you get my drift.

It wouldn't be the first time a problem has been 'covered over' by a workman!

  • Not quite the same, but when we moved last year, I put ladders un-suspectingly on the floor and when I stood on them the floorboard caved under the ladder leg. The floorboard was sitting loose, and must have been ok while there was carpet stretched over it, but I didn't notice at all when I put the ladders there.

I am thinking what someone else said, that maybe the tile was on top of a bad spot already, and maybe the corner of the tile was over a hole or loose area, allowing it to slip through.

Check the surrounding area, if there is now a lifted tile and/or hole you should be able to tell if the wood is rotten.
  • paddedjohn - yes the tiles are directly on top of floorboards

Valli - yes i think this is what may have happened

lesley74 - yes sound like the same thing.

The hubby has checked and the wood is all crumbly - my cousin who does all bits and bobs is coming to check next week.

Thanks for your replies really appriciated

Then I'm afraid the problem isn't just one broken tile...

  • ewcs - is there any need really - do you think if i was 40 stone and have made the floor collapse i would have left a post on here.

The people on these boards come for help and its people who leave rude and not so nice comments that can cause a lot of upset to people and can give the whole site a bad name.

fyi - i could be a size 6 glamour model or a size 30 lazy lay about - but its not really any of your buisness!

Quite right cotton wool Katie. People come on here for help but you sometimes get the dim whits with nothing better to do. Sad people.
    Hope you get sorted.
And if people have no constructed good advice for people who may need help and advice keep your evil remarks to yourselves
  • macman - yea looks like the whole floor is going to have to come up not good!

saver 1 - thanks - and ditto what you said - ive been brought up to respect people and would never dream of leaving the kind of comments that Norman Castle & ewcs have left its just rude

    Thanks again for your comments
