Probably wasn't the strongest password - its a very old one and wasn't very complex. Luckily don't use the same password for anything else.
Now changed to a very complex one (so much so I've had to write it down temporarily!)A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
This looks more like a case of spoofing your email address than hacking your account to me.
Hacking bots don't usually worry about tidying up the sent mail folder after themselves.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.

Have to say I agree with withechristmas ^^^0

Thanks for the info Node, very helpful.
White Christmas - if it was a case of spoofing surely I wouldn't have received the mailer daemon reports? Though I see what you mean about a bot not deleting the sent items.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
As far as the recipient is concerned, any mail from a spoofed address originates from that address, so you get undeliverable notifications and the occasional "**** off you spamming ******" reply.
It usually only lasts for a couple of weeks. If you're getting a lot of undeliverable messages, you can usually set up a rule based on the title to shove them straight in the trash.
It's not your fault; this usually arises when one of your contacts gets a worm which harvests the addresses in their address book. There's nothing you can do to stop it, I'm afraid.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.

I think you might be right, White Christmas.
I think it might have just happened to my main email account. A few days ago, I got an email from an old friend who I hadn't heard from for a while. I clicked on it, and it was just a link, so immediately I'm suspicious. So I checked the people he had sent it to, and recognised a couple of names, so I thought, 'ok', and clicked on it.
I got a pop-up warning about malware, so I just clcked the x, and got rid of the page.
Today, I checked in my spam folder. My email address is in my contacts as 'me' (in case I forget
). Anyway, I seem to have four emails from my email address to my email address offering me a particular sex enhancing drug. I didn't even know that I had any to sell to myself, or indeed that I needed it!
Anyway, I'll be annoyed if my mail account has been spoofed. I just emailed a mate to see if he got any spam off me... I suppose if there's nothing one can do, there's nothing one can do. I'll just be more careful next time.0 -
My mate just got back to me- no spam from my email address in either of his accounts. Very odd...0

Something like 95% of all spam is filtered out by the email providers at server level these days - can you imagine what it would be like without them??
It's probably worth your while to do a Malwarebytes scan just to make sure you're clean, but I suspect closing down the page was enough to ensure you weren't compromised.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.

Cheers again WhiteChristmas. I did a malware scan, and it found no threats.
Still not sure how I got spam from my own address in my spam folder, but there you go- it'll just have to remain a mystery :-D0
