No boot PC

Sometimes my PC just will not boot up, it's a hit and miss. I am running Vista basic on a Dell Vostro 200. All I get is the black screen with the microsft bar running at the bottom.

I have run it through repair and system restore but still get the problem on and off.

Someone kindly asked me to run a Highjck this log, see below. Would appreciate any help please but a pensioner and not very PC literate so in terms I could understand please

  • Not gone through it too much, but you seem to have a few different antivirus programs there, mcaffe/avast etc. maybe try with just one.
    Can you describe it not booting a bit more? does it simply freeze on the black screen or restart itself.
    And when you say microsoft bar, are you talking about the "start/taskbar" after log in or the loading bar prior to logging in, thanks

    It was suggested on here I download Avast and Malwarebyt then Hijack this which is why it's there.

    Mcaffe is not used now so I guess I could get rid of that

    Its just the black screen with the running green bar after the Dell logo.
    Sometimes it just continues running like that and sometimes it boots up staright away. I have to turn it on and off manualy several times before it will boot

    Do you ever backup your data? Turning it off like that (which is unavoidable) can sometimes corrupt the file system, and may stop it booting completely

    If you have any USB item connected to your computer, unplug it/them then try a re-boot, some I have found for whatever reason hold the USB occasionally and does not release so stopping the boot.

  • how long do you leave the loading screen on for before giving up?
    Wondering if its a failing HDD or something causing the controller to operate in PIO mode instead of DMA. That can result in much longer loading times

    I would agree that the most likely cause is your hard drive starting to fail, so get a backup done without delay.
    Try running the drive diagnostics program which your PC should come with.
    When you say, 'turn off manually', do you mean by holding down the power on switch-or are you switching off at the wall socket? The latter will shorten the life of the drive, don't do it.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Don't focus on viruses or malware being the cause, this is most unlikely and neither of the scans suggested would pick up a bios problem. The likelihood of an infection causing an intermittent startup problem is almost zero. I'm afraid this is often suggested by people who wish to impress but in reality have very limited understanding of computer systems.
    I have to agree, failing hard drive does seem the most likely, however. Can you access the bios startup screen when you get a startup failure? Is so try to startup in safe mode. Have you tried repair from the startup screen or just through Windows? if not give it a go if you can.
    Do take the advice to backup though, now.
  • Thanks everyone for your help, not good news if the hard drive is on it's way out. We have a friend who is willing to come and have a look at it ( he also thought it might be the hard drive ) He will be able to put a new one in for us so I hope that will solve the problem.

    The PC is only 3 years old but I suppose it is the luck of the draw.

    Not sure how to back everything up again, grandson did it a while back for us but I guess our friend will do that for us before he changes the hard drive.
