  • Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what you want to know about stocks and share ISAs. However, here is some general information.

Stocks and share ISAs are simply wrappers, into which you can slot certain investments like individual shares, or investment funds. The concept is fairly straightforward, although the underlying investments or funds may not be. Essentially, all growth and income is tax-free, and you can put in as much as £10,200 per person, per tax year.

The wrapper is a great way to save tax-free for the medium to long term, so there is nothing to criticise about that. Perhaps criticism may be levelled at individual products?

I would post a link to my blog on ISA rules, but I'm not allowed to do so as a new user!

A tax wrapper that can contain around 50,000 different types of investments and an infinite number of variations.

Your question is a bit asking what we think of a bucket or a shopping trolley. The container has a few advantages but more important is what you put in the container. Of course, any decent article would cover this.

Income is not actually tax free; but it doesn't have to be declared & there is no more tax to pay and ASFAIK the tax credit can't be reclaimed.

On equities yes. But on interest it can be reclaimed. So, fixed interest securities are often best placed in the ISA (if you have wrapped and unwrapped investments)
