Help! Barclays hounding me!

I had a current account with Barclays a number of years ago, which had a substantial overdraft on it. I got into financial difficulties, and the upshot was that the account was frozen and passed to a debt collection agency called RMA. I had a payment agreement with them, and eventually managed to borrow some money from a family member to pay off an agreed settlement sum in April last year.

I did not receive acknowledgement from them that the debt was cleared, but they had the money from my (new) current account by debit card.

I have heard nothing from either them or Barclays since; however, late last night I received a call from a company called Robinson Way, who claim I now owe over £500 on this closed account!

What the heck is going on? I told them I had paid this off, and they said they would investigate it with Barclays, but that it was Barclays who had passed the debt to them this week!

I have emailed Barclays to ask them what is going on, but does this company have a right to make me prove I have paid the debt off, or is it up to them to prove I haven't??

I thought I had put all this stress behind me ....

Silvercat, they have to show you proof of what the money is required for - plus a breakdown of any charges etc so appeal it with the debt collection agency (whilst emailing barclays as per previous posters advice). Good luck

  • Thanks for the advice guys. I have emailed Barclays Customer Relations and am awaiting their response. Robinson Way have tried to contact me again today (by SMS) and I will wait for them to call again, before requesting proof of the debt in writing.

I am trying not to stress about this, as I am sure this is just a miscommunication somewhere - I have heard nothing from RMA to say that I still owe THEM money, and they were the ones that bought the debt.

Write them a template letter off here you will find a 'prove it' letter template on a lot of the posts in the debt free wannabe board. But remember to never sign anything or provide any driving licence, passport or other forms of id to DCA's - they aren't allowed to request them.
