all depends
buying everything new?
do you need windows or do you have a spare license or are willing to use Linux?
do you have any spare parts yourself?
all new from ebuyer
LiteOn IHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black with Nero Essentials 176026 > 200 in stock £11.99
Casecom 7720 Black Mid Tower Case with 450W 24pin SATA PSU 174506 799 in stock £22.85 - case and PSU not ever going to be great but very cheap - would probably need to change at least the PSU if you ever plan on upgrading the system
SAMSUNG 3.5 INCH 160GB SATA HDD 7200RPM 226785 > 5 in stock £26.06 - basic hard drive not big but should 'do' - for £40 you can get a fast 1tb hard drive but of course that adds to the price
AMD Sempron 140 2.7GHz Socket AM3 1MB Cache Retail Box Processor 168973 49 in stock £24.92 - cheap as chips single core, however AM3 so allows for the ability to upgrade to a better CPU when funds allow
Sapphire PURE Innovation 760G Socket AM3 VGA DVI Out 6 Channel Audio MATX Motherboard 253356 10 in stock £38.24 - on board graphics, AM3 so some upgradeability in future as above with the CPU
Crucial 2GB DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10600 Memory CL9 1.5V 159919 43 in stock £17.99 - single 2gb stick will allow you to get another 2gb if needed in future
Cart total inc vat: £142.05
windows is about £70Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -

join freecycle. I see computers on ours very often. Even laptops sometimes. Unless you are looking for gaming machines, these would be adequate for homework and surfing.0

You'd be spending alot more than you could pickup a decent second hand PC for.
A reasonable 2nd hand basic PC would be £30-£50.
To start building, the cheapest not-recommended components will at minimum be power supply £20, case £10, copy of windows £70, keyboard £3, mouse £5, and you've not even thought abut a processor/hard drive / motherboard / RAM yet.
Basically the lower your budget the drastically less economical building your own becomes.0 -
As everyone else has said, you cant build them as cheap as you can buy them second hand, go to the likes of cash converters, they have older PCs, freecycle, gumtree, all of those are your best bets.
Also you could try the yellow ad trader paper and possible ebay if you dont mind waiting/picking up the machine yourself.0 -

Getting one off freecycle or freegle is a good idea, but if you go after a laptop on there then you stand about 1 in a 100 chance of getting it I reckon.
I advertised an old laptop with broken power connector and got inundated with requests.
On the other hand I've just let go an old Win 98 Tower with 32mb memory and 2GB disk space and had 2 replies, so you stand a much better chance of getting one off freecycle (and freegle as well) if you're not picky.0 -
One auction I go to sells Dell P4 3HGz, 80GB HDD, 1GB RAM desktops for around £30 and they'll happily run Vista/Windows 7 with an extra 1GB.0
