how to update Garmin streetpilot i3

Hi,

I bought my Garmin Streetpilot i3 in Dec 05 and when you search for an address it has a few other countries on it such as France and Belgium. Does this mean that it will navigate to any address in those countries or will it just show the maps? Only I searched for an address in Brugge and it could not find it and had limited search results, though it does identify Brugge itself.
Since I have these countries pre-installed on the unit, can I update the maps free on the Garmin website? Yesterday I updated the software program, but though my unit advises me to update its maps every time I switch it on now, I do not know how to do it. It does not say in my guidebook whether the maps are locked or unlocked and use of the website does not seem straightforward..
Confused. Please help!
