Spar charging 50p for cashback

Don't know if this is nation-wide, but the one I went to told me it's 50p. I asked a very stern 'why' and was told (stroppily) 'it's just the way it is'.

Tight fisted ***'s. After everywhere was bigging up cashback as a way to avoid cash machine fees, Spar rip off their customers with this one.

Do you think this because they're loosing money on their £2-a-pop cash machines they have in their stores?

  • My local 10 pin bowling alley gives cashback on debit AND credit cards, I always make sure to get £50 cash with my egg card while I'm there.

I know I only make 25p but it's a nice change to have someone pay me for getting at my own money.

One day they're going to realise the error of their ways and put a stop to it!

Grrrr I hate being charged to draw my money out of the bank. If you pay 50p you are also paying Spar to disperse their cash so they don't have to pay bank charges to pay the cash in.... Cheeky or what?

Does anyone know whether retailers are charged for switch transactions?

I know they are charged for credit cards but what about debit cards?
  • Retailers are usually charged a percentage of the transaction for credit cards and a fixed fee for debit cards.

This is why cashback came about, it doesn't cost them anymore to give you some cash along with your goods but it save them on bank fees, handling, security etc etc.

Since they actually benefit from you using the cashback service it's a bit cheeky (at the very least) to ask you to pay for it as well.

Which ten pin bowling alley was it? When they gave you cashback on your credit card transaction, did they treat the transaction as a purchase or a cash advance, or the bowling bit as purchase and the cashback bit as cash advance?
  • Hi, It's one in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.

The whole lot just goes through as one purchase, I ask for £50 cashback and they charge me £57.50 for 3 games and hand me 50 sheets.

I'd ask for more but don't want to push my luck!
  • My local Spar has always charged 50p for cashback. I only use it if the cash machine outside is not working, although sometimes they give cashback on credit cards which makes it a cheap way of getting money out on these cards for me.
